Coming Up Empty

Stepping into the unknown of creative reverie and returning to reality with something new, different, true and honest fills me with immense pride and excitement. No matter how scattershot or schemed my methods, how serendipitous or considered my discovery the feeling is the same, excitement and wonder.

Excitement for the something that has come from nothing and wonder about what else can be discovered with the application of patience, skill, time, imagination, graft or just fluke.

At photography club tonight we had the first round of a competition called The Walker Cup and it was inspiring. There were so many great images shown (example 1, 2, 3, 4). I know that seeing these images feeds into my process and influences my choices, so I'm grateful for the chance to share.

I'm not going to talk about the above image, it's there for your interpretation, as always I hope you enjoy it.

It's Been A While

I get paid to work, but my work isn't photography (those are two facts you could have assumed from just using my photos as evidence - because you're Sherlock Holmes and this sentence 'goes without saying'). Anyway, sometimes my work is all consuming and tiring, meaning that I don't even have the strength to lift my camera let alone point it at things and click buttons, ALL DAY WITH THE FRICKING BUTTONS... ENOUGH ALREADY!

So, I'm looking through old photos and trying to decide which ones I want to print and which ones I wish I had never taken.

Here's two photos I may print. Gloss for the pic from Yale and matt for the pic of London Wall.

Wow... I whinge! A LOT! Hope you find the photos pretty, love you, buy.

Landscapes | Holkham Revisited

Last night, the photographic society had a guest speaker, Chris Palmer (his website here). He showed a collection of his work and some slides he had taken for the purposes of illustrating techniques to improve landscape photos.

I take a passing interest in Landscape but I'm no fanatic. However the talk inspired me to look back to my Holkham visit and grab one of the landscape photos I took there.

Looking forward I think I'm going to take a greater interest in Landscape photography, Chris called it a craft and I agree that it takes an a lot of skill and dedication. The dedication I can do, the skill, I hope will follow.

Seven Times Down, Eight Times Up

I took the photo below on the second day of my new habit forming exercise. I plan to take a photo every day, one photo each day that I can be proud of. On day two of my new habit I took a photo of a Daruma.

A Daruma is a toy and good luck charm that represents perseverance and fortune. It is a gift which is meant to encourage the recipient to achieve their goal. Upon receiving a Daruma the recipient draws a pupil into one of the blank eyes and sets a goal, when the goal has been fulfilled the they draw the other eye in.

You can see that my Daruma only has one eye, my goal changed before the original one came to fruition, I still mean to fill in the second eye.

New Outlook

"So many fail because they don't get started - they don't go. They don't overcome inertia. They don't begin."

NYE Fail

My New Years Eve-Eve was spent drunk in West London with Idris Elba (The Wire, Luther) and Riz MC (Four Lions) - heads up, I'm dropping names all over this blog post. That's the best part of my NYEE, want to know the worst part? I was too inebriated to appreciate or remember that I met Idris Elba and Riz MC... Fail.

The next day, New Years Eve, I felt so wretched that I only mustered the strength to pull a duvet over my head and reach for the remote control. This self portrait sums up how I felt yesterday!

Ho-hum! It's a new day, it's a new dawn, it's a new me and today - the 1st of January 2011 - I'm feeling good.
